While spending some time shooting surfers in Hermosa Beach I decided to see if a couple of them would pose for a portrait. I asked them not to smile and I explained it made the moment feel more honest.
I was grateful that people donated not only their time, but their willingness to have a stranger take their photo. I found the more formidable and unapproachable someone apeared, the more appreciative they were when asked.
I’ve discovered that for the most part, in a spontaneous moment, people are quite receptive to having their photo taken.
It's become something I'll do often now whenever I have my camera with me.
